Foliar Organic Fertilizer

Nowadays, organic gardening has become a common practice. With the increasing environmental concerns in the agricultural industry, it seems the logical choice for most home gardeners.

Organic Fertilizers

There are many types of organic fertilizers available for home use. They are classified according to the materials used during their processing (fish by-products, seaweed, bone ash, blood meal, etc.) and also according to their method of application, e.g. liquid foliar spray or dry tea.

Foliar organic fertilizers are preferred by farmers for their benefits and convenience. Foliar organic fertilizers are typically applied using spray canisters. As opposed to organic dry tea, foliar organic fertilizers are easy to apply and provide less hassle for the farmer or the regular home grower.

The Benefits of Foliar Organic Fertilizers

The most touted benefit of foliar organic fertilizers is its capacity to promote maximum nutrient absorption. This is based on the belief that foliar organic fertilizers causes an increase in sugar levels in plants which then stimulate soil activity and plant nutrient uptake.

Calculated observations show that the application of foliar organic fertilizer in farms or gardens causes a significant increase in plant yields. Also, foliar organic fertilizers are an effective means to prevent plant diseases and fungi-attack. The reason is that, foliar organic fertilizers cover the leaves and stems, the plant parts that are susceptible to pests and parasites.

Foliar organic fertilizers have several other benefits but overall though it all depends on the success of applications and the economics of nutrient supply.

The Basics in Applying Foliar Organic Fertilizers to Plants

It is always advisable to dilute your foliar organic fertilizer first before application. Too much concentration of foliar organic fertilizers may cause crop damage and foliage “burning.”
Make sure that the PH level of your foliar organic fertilizer spray is at a neutral range.

Foliar organic fertilizer sprays achieve best effect by increasing the spray pressure or by using a mist blower, allowing the liquid to “drift” over the plants.
Only use foliar organic fertilizer sprays when there is little or no wind.
Nutrient absorption of foliar organic fertilizers is enhanced when the air is humid and moist with a temperature of 80 degrees or below (in Fahrenheit). This is due to the fact that the plants’ main nutrient canals, the stomata, are open in low temperatures.
And finally, for better nutrient absorption, make sure that your foliar organic fertilizer sprays reach the undersides of leaves, where the stomata are located.
